Deciding whether you should hire an attorney or estate tax professional to help

create your estate plan generally depends on your situation.

If your estate is small and your wishes are simple, an online will-writing program

may be right for you. Be sure the program accounts for IRS and state-specific requirements and walks you through writing a will using a process that surveys your life, finances and what you want to leave and to whom.

If you aren’t sure about the process, you may want to consider consulting with an estate planning attorney and possibly a tax advisor. They can help you determine if you are on the right track for planning your estate–especially if you live in a state that has its own estate and/or inheritance taxes.

For large/complex estates–Estates with business issues, non familial heirs, special child care concerns should consult with an estate planning attorney and a tax professional to help navigate the complexities of these matters and more.
